A Settled Heart in an Unsettled House
2 SAMUEL 15:1–7, 13–30
“Absalom behaved in this way toward all the Israelites who came to the king asking for justice, and so he stole the hearts of the people of Israel.” — 2 Samuel 15:6
Before Absalom ever raised an army, he raised a posture — standing daily by the city gate, intercepting every complaint, offering sympathy David never had the chance to give. “If only I were appointed judge,” he said, and the people believed him, because there was a vacancy in their hearts that David’s absence had created.
A father’s authority is never only about decisions made. It is about a presence felt — a steadiness a household can lean against. When Absalom finally moved against him, David did not answer with the same restless ambition that had built his son’s following. He wept up the Mount of Olives, barefoot, his head covered, and still he gave clear orders — to Zadok, to the people, to Ittai — even as he was losing everything.
That is what a strong and steady hand from a strong and settled heart looks like. Not the absence of grief. Not the absence of loss. But the presence of an anchor beneath the grief, so that sorrow does not curdle into chaos, and chaos does not curdle into cruelty.
You will have days when your household feels like it is unraveling — when your authority is questioned, when your children’s hearts seem to be turning elsewhere, when leading well feels like losing. The question is not whether your hands will shake. It is whether your heart, beneath the shaking hands, is settled in something — Someone — who does not move.

Reflect: When your household feels unsettled, what is your heart actually resting on?
Prayer: Settle my heart in You before You ask my hands to be steady for anyone else. Amen.
