Friends – Day 2: The Two-Way Street Between Heart and Relationships

Hey friend,

Yesterday we saw that God shapes us through our relationships. Today we look at why: there is a two-way street between our inner world and our outer world.

Scripture of the Day

"One whose heart is corrupt does not prosper; one whose tongue is perverse falls into trouble. To have a fool for a child brings grief; there is no joy for the parent of a godless fool. A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones."
Proverbs 17:20–22 (NIV)

Proverbs describes a loop that most of us have lived. What is going on inside us — a corrupt heart, a cheerful heart, a crushed spirit — shows up in how we speak, how we treat people, and how our relationships go. And the reverse is just as true: a painful relationship can crush our spirit and dry us up from the inside.

James asks the question bluntly: "What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you?" (James 4:1). Many of our conflicts are not really about the dishes, the text message, or the tone of voice. They are about what is battling inside us.

This is why our relational health is so powerful. It will shape us, for better or worse. A cheerful heart is good medicine, and the people we walk with can help carry that medicine to us — or take it away.

Reflection Question

Think about a relationship that feels strained right now. What might be going on in your inner world that is shaping how you show up? And how is that relationship shaping what is going on inside you?

Prayer

Lord, You see the battles inside me that I don't always admit to. Heal my heart so that my words and my actions bring life to the people around me. Where relationships have crushed my spirit, restore me. Where my spirit has hurt others, forgive me. Give me a cheerful heart that is good medicine. Amen.

In His grace,
The Brook Miami
